Everything You Need to Know About Quartzite Countertops

Quartzite is one of the most beautiful — and most misunderstood — countertop materials on the market. It’s often confused with engineered quartz, yet the two are completely different. If you love the look of marble but want something built to last, quartzite deserves a spot on your shortlist.

At Granite Solution 1 Inc, we’ve been fabricating and installing natural stone since 1999, and in more than 25 years we’ve watched quartzite grow from a niche choice into one of our most requested surfaces. Here’s everything you need to know before you choose it for your kitchen or bath.

What Is Quartzite, Exactly?

Quartzite is a natural stone — not a manufactured one. It forms when sandstone is exposed to intense heat and pressure deep in the earth, fusing its quartz grains into an extremely hard, dense stone. That natural process gives quartzite:

  • rich, flowing veining and natural movement
  • a bright, often marble-like appearance
  • remarkable hardness and durability

Because it’s quarried straight from the earth, every quartzite slab is one of a kind.

Quartzite vs. Quartz: Clearing Up the Confusion

The names sound alike, but these are two very different materials — and mixing them up is the most common mistake homeowners make.

  • Quartzite is 100% natural stone, quarried in slabs. It’s porous and needs periodic sealing.
  • Quartz is engineered — ground quartz blended with resins — and is non-porous, so it never needs sealing.

Tip: If a salesperson uses “quartz” and “quartzite” interchangeably, ask them to clarify. They perform and are cared for very differently.

The Look: Marble Beauty, Serious Durability

This is where quartzite really wins people over. Quartzite often mimics the soft, elegant veining of marble — but it’s far tougher and lower-maintenance. You’ll find it in:

  • bright whites and soft grays with dramatic veining
  • warm earthy tones with gold and beige movement
  • bold, one-of-a-kind patterns you won’t see twice

For homeowners who want that high-end marble look without marble’s fragility, quartzite is often the perfect answer.

Durability and Heat Resistance

Quartzite is one of the hardest natural surfaces you can put in a kitchen.

  • It’s highly scratch-resistant — often even harder than granite.
  • As a natural stone, it stands up to heat exceptionally well.
  • It resists everyday wear beautifully when properly sealed.

That said, we still recommend cutting boards and trivets — not because quartzite can’t take it, but because they help protect the sealer and keep the surface pristine.

Caring for Quartzite

Maintenance is simple, and very similar to granite. To keep quartzite looking its best:

  • clean with warm water and mild soap or a pH-neutral stone cleaner
  • wipe up spills promptly, especially anything acidic
  • avoid harsh or abrasive cleaners
  • reseal periodically — typically once or twice a year

A quick water-drop test tells you when it’s time to reseal: if water beads on the surface, you’re protected; if it soaks in and darkens the stone, it’s time.

One Thing to Know Before You Buy

Here’s an insider tip most homeowners never hear.

Some slabs sold as “quartzite” are actually softer stones — like dolomitic marble — that look similar but etch and scratch more easily. True quartzite is extremely hard; softer lookalikes are not.

That’s why it matters to work with an experienced fabricator who can:

  • identify genuine quartzite from lookalikes
  • test the stone’s hardness and porosity
  • recommend the right sealing schedule for your specific slab

Tip: When in doubt, ask how the stone performs on a simple scratch or acid test — a knowledgeable team will be happy to show you.
